Church's view on suicide and depression (by Walt C)
According to the Bible, death by suicide is a grave and serious sin. The reason for that is because our lives belong to God. He gave us the gift of life and to take that away would be considered sin. We are to preserve our life to honor God for what he has given us and for the sake of our own salvation. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church “Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.” These teachings explain to us that suicide goes against everything that God sent for us to do. We are meant to live our lives healthy and in the image of God therefore killing ourselves would go against that. It is selfish to God and all those around us to commit suicide since it is our law to live together as a community and children of God.

I agree with the Catholic Church’s view on suicide and depression. Committing suicide is not what God wants us to do. God created us for a reason, and that reason is for us to live in the image of God. Since the closest cure for depression is prescription drugs, it does not always stop a person from committing suicide. When a person is going through a depressed stage they need to have faith on God. I think by having faith in God when putting your mind to accomplish something, only good things will happen.
ReplyDeleteThe Catholic Church's view on suicide, in my opinion, is completley right. God gave us the gift of life and only he has the right to take it away. By one commiting the act of suicide they are distroying all sense of self-respect, commiting the gravest of sins, and going against everything that God has told us. Not only is suicide a selfish act but it is an impulsive, thoughtless act as well. Suicide is not the only outlet for people suffering with depression and with God they can realize that and find their inner self by making their faith in God stronger.
ReplyDeleteAs humans with the gift of free will, we have the power to do as we please with our lives, but suicide is the act of throwing it all away along with the other gifts God has given us. Life is the ultimate gift, it is a miracle that we have the power to make life. If God loves us enough to make us part of this beautiful world then we should not have the audacity to reject his gift and throw it away. Therefore, I agree with the Catholic Church, for suicide goes against several of the Ten Commandments. It is a ripple effect that changes the lives of so many people around you. If the depressed teenager does not love himself/herself enough to take proper care of themselves, they should think of the ones that truly love them like their family. Hope should never be given up so easily, there is ALWAYS hope.
